Newbury Park, CA

Rancho Conejo Village

Rancho Conejo Village is a residential subdivision on the northwest side of Newbury Park, in the City of Thousand Oaks, clustered around North Ventu Park Road and Lawrence Drive, served by the Conejo Valley Unified School District. The site's history predates the neighborhood itself: it was once Rancho Conejo Airport, opened May 5, 1960, before the runway was eventually redeveloped for residential use. Today the neighborhood sits immediately adjacent to Rancho Conejo Playfields, a 13-acre park that Shapell Industries built and dedicated to the Conejo Recreation and Park District in 1997. That same park is also the trailhead for the 302-acre Arroyo Conejo Open Space, a canyon and oak-woodland preserve. For groceries and quick dining, the Ventu Park Center sits at the same intersection, anchored by a Ralphs grocery store, with Del Taco and Luau Grill among its tenants. Note that 'Rancho Conejo' is also the name of a separate business park and a distinct apartment community nearby, so confirm which one you mean when searching.

What defines it

The Housing Stock

Rancho Conejo Village's homes sit on a site with its own layered history, a former general-aviation airport redeveloped for residential use, a different origin story than Newbury Park's original postwar tracts.

Frequently asked

Was this neighborhood really built on an old airport?

Yes. Rancho Conejo Airport, also known as Janss Airport, opened May 5, 1960 near where Ventu Park Road intersects Lawrence Drive today. The site was later redeveloped into the residential neighborhood now known as Rancho Conejo. Accounts differ on exactly when and why the airfield closed, sometime in the mid-to-late 1960s.

Is 'Rancho Conejo' the same as the business park near Amgen?

No. At least three different things share the name: this residential neighborhood; a separate, non-residential business and biotech park along Rancho Conejo Boulevard; and Arroyo Villa, an unrelated 354-unit apartment community on the same boulevard. Specify which one you mean when searching, since listings and search results for all three can overlap.

Is there a park within walking distance?

Yes. Rancho Conejo Playfields, a 13-acre park with softball fields, lighted tennis and pickleball courts, and a playground, sits immediately adjacent. Developer Shapell Industries built and dedicated the park to the Conejo Recreation and Park District in 1997. The same park is also the trailhead for the 302-acre Arroyo Conejo Open Space, a canyon and oak-woodland preserve.

What school district serves Rancho Conejo Village?

The Conejo Valley Unified School District, the same single K-through-12 district that covers all of Newbury Park. Confirm which specific schools serve a given address directly with the district, since attendance boundaries can vary street by street.

Where's the closest grocery store and quick dining?

Ventu Park Center, at the same intersection as the neighborhood's namesake park, is anchored by a Ralphs grocery store. Del Taco and Luau Grill Hawaiian BBQ & Poke are confirmed open tenants there as of July 2026.

Is Rancho Conejo Village inside Thousand Oaks or unincorporated Ventura County?

It's within city limits. It doesn't appear on the City of Thousand Oaks' own list of unincorporated county-island pockets in the Newbury Park area, which names only Casa Conejo and Ventu Park, and the adjoining park is run by a City-of-Thousand-Oaks-affiliated recreation agency.
