Lake Sherwood is a private, low-density community of roughly 630 homes, a ceiling set directly by county land-use policy (plus up to 51 more in one planning unit), built around a private reservoir reserved for residents and club members, not the public. County rules require a licensed private security guard on site around the clock, with emergency-only access gates at Carlisle Road and any structure near the water held above the 965-foot elevation contour. Two private clubs anchor the community, though membership isn't required to live here: Sherwood Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus championship course that opened in 1989, and Sherwood Lake Club, a shorter Nicklaus par-3 course that Rick Caruso's company acquired in early 2026 and, per a single July 2026 report, is renaming to Miramar Lake Club (not yet reflected on the club's own site). There's no retail or dining inside the community; residents drive to The Promenade at Westlake for shopping, and schools run through Conejo Valley Unified: Westlake Elementary, Colina Middle, and Westlake High. The reservoir dates to a 1904 dam and takes its name from the Sherwood Forest sets of a 1923 Robin Hood film shot nearby; despite the Westlake Village name in everyday marketing, Lake Sherwood is its own unincorporated Ventura County community, not part of either bordering city.
