Summerland
Summerland is an unincorporated community in Santa Barbara County, along the South Coast between Montecito and Carpinteria and split by U.S. Highway 101. It has no city government of its own; development is guided by the Summerland Community Plan, adopted in 1992 as the county's first community plan and updated in 2014. A 2024 American Community Survey estimate put the population at roughly 1,348. The town traces its founding to 1888, when Henry Lafayette Williams subdivided his Ortega Rancho holdings into small lots for fellow Spiritualists and, in 1890, recorded a trust dedicating land to build a Spiritual Temple; the name reflects Spiritualists' term for the plane where departed spirits were believed to reside. A decade later, in 1898, Summerland became the first place in the world to have an offshore oil well, the Treadwell Pier, which extended 1,230 feet from shore and supported twenty wells; the onshore field went on to produce more than three million barrels before abandonment around 1939-40. On the bluffs above the shoreline, county-run Lookout Park offers picnic areas and a paved path down to Summerland Beach, while Lillie Avenue and Ortega Hill Road host a small cluster of antique shops and cafés.

Is there a walkable dining and shopping area?
Yes. Lillie Avenue and Ortega Hill Road host a small cluster of businesses confirmed operating as of 2026, including The Nugget Bar and Grill, Summerland Beach Café, Feast at Field + Fort, Summerland Antique Collective, and Mary Suding Antiques. The Victorian-era Big Yellow House building changed ownership in March 2026 and is being converted into a community makers art space called the Big Yellow House Artelier; its prior restaurant and yoga-studio tenants are no longer operating there.
